For centuries, the beautiful village of Trikeri has been a watching
over three seas: in the north, the waters of the Pagasitic gulf,
in the south the North Evoean Sea, and a little further in the east,
the Aegean Sea. Its history is recorded through the centuries too
. Homer called the village Kikynithos, and Palio Trikeri was the
name used by his descendants. |

Three thousand years later, in the 18th century a
newer period in Trikeri's history started. It's first inhabitants,
were people from Mani, the village Kakla, Cretans and Vlaché
from Pindos.
Tired from the pirate raids, it's people lit three candles and started
to walk uphill the mountain. At the point the candles extinguished,
they built the church and around it the houses.
The village is famous for its marine history, and is very different
compared to the other Pelion villages, although it is not an island
, it has an islands character that comes in opposition to
Mani and Macedonian style mansions, that combine two styles deriving
of builders who were brought from Ioannina. |
The port-serving village of Agia Kiriaki is a quaint
and picturesque one and that stretches in front of the Cross, which
is the point where the three seas meet.
If you find yourself here, it wont be difficult to understand
what has been making all the people of this place turn to the sea
for centuries. At the back, the scenery is dominated by rocks and
hills. At the front, a narrow line of sea separates you from Thessaly
and further more the central region of Greece and the nearby island
of Evia. |
And if you turn your eye to Sorokos, you will see
the open sea unfolding its beauty in front of your eyes. It sometimes
seems as if the sea lures you to travel it.
Here was the departure point for sponge fishing boats, heading out
towards every corner of the Aegean and Libyan Sea, for the two last
centuries.
The sponge fishermen from Trikeri, were famous not only for their
efficiency and experience, but also for their companionship.
Although they had one of the biggest boat fleets in the Aegean and
Mediterranean Sea, the accidents amongst the boats of Trikeri were
few and far between.
It is not coincidental that captains from other places came to Trikeri
to hire divers for their sponge fleets. And is not a coincidence
either that the famous Jacques-Yves Cousteau had in his team in
1956, the diver from Trikeri Stavros Delikonstantis.
Every night at the local cafes, you can hear stories from every
corner of the earth, exotic places, or deep waters. You will hear
stories about Cape Town, India, New York, Curacao and stories about
deep dives and long ascends.
That s Trikeri. |
